Kelly Ording: SUNGAZING
A lot of the paintings in this body of work are bright, colorful, and created during the summer and fall months when I would stand outside of my studio for several minutes throughout the day and just turn my face towards the sun and take that in. Sungazing is a form of meditation or religious practice, much like the act of painting is for me.
- Kelly Ording
Kelly Ording's Sungazing series explores the physical, symbolic and contemplative dimensions of the sun. Her minimalist paintings speak to us through a visual language of deeply saturated colors and delicately rendered forms, inviting us to clear our minds of mental clutter and open to an alternative realm beyond words. The paintings in this series are inspired by Ording's practice of sungazing, a meditative ritual that that involves standing outside and gazing toward the sun to absorb its radiant energy. For Ording, the slow and methodical process of painting becomes an extension of this meditative ritual. Her luminous works beautifully encapsulate the experience of sungazing, bridging ancient reverence with contemporary reflections on light, hope, renewal, and vitality. Through vibrant hues and radiant compositions, the paintings evoke a sense of transcendence, inviting viewers to connect with both historical traditions and personal interpretations of the sun’s significance. Ording’s repetitive lines and patterns embody a profound sense of presence, capturing fleeting moments and immersing viewers in the passage of time, akin to the Earth’s steady rhythm as it spins on its axis and orbits the sun.
