Jason Langer

Jason Langer is best known for his lush black and white photographs capturing noirish visions of contemporary urban life. Over the past two decades Langer, who shoots on film, has developed a photographic language where his images have a theatrical sensibility and a mystery described variously as cinematic and poetic, haunting and romantic. Avoiding staged tableaux Langer’s images strive always to capture the unanticipated or chance moment, layered with timeless drama and dynamism. Langer descends from a tradition of photographers, George Krause, Ralph Gibson, Roy deCarava, Bill Brandt, Matt Mahurin, photographing what is physically happening in the world, as the unexpected appears for brief glimpses before returning to generally accepted social norms.
