Nick Brandt: SINK / RISE

17 June - 26 July 2024
Overview
The photographs comprising SINK / RISE are remarkable in their ability to be simultaneously approachable and enigmatic, to be political and inclusive. They invite us to linger, to look harder, and to go deeper. With every return, there is something new to discover— within the images or within us.Zoe Lescaze, in the foreword to SINK / RISE
SINK / RISE is the third chapter of The Day May Break, an ongoing global series portraying people and animals impacted by environmental degradation and destruction.  Everyone and everything was shot in-camera underwater.
This chapter turns its lens  on South Pacific Islanders impacted by rising oceans from climate change. The local people in these images, photographed underwater off the coast of the Fijian islands, are representatives of the many people whose homes, land and livelihoods will be lost in the coming decades as the water rises.

The artist will further illuminate his creative process and the ethos behind Sink/Rise during a speaking engagement at The Community Library in Ketchum, ID, on July 11. Brandt's book Sink/Rise, which captures behind the scenes images, is  available for purchase on our website.
